“After looking at boats and looking at the prices I decided to build my own, after trawling the internet trying to find a local designer of kit boats I was put onto David Sherwood. After discussing my needs with him he offered me a kit boat from his range.
The kit I chose was for the 6m half cabin, upon receipt of the kit I looked at the plans, read the instructions and proceeded with the build, any queries I had were soon solved by reading the instructions again or a phone call to David. The build went very smoothly, to my surprise all plates aligned perfectly with the joints, no grinding or cutting!! Time taken making sure all plates aligned properly was time well spent, trust has to be earnt, and on this build you have to trust the designer. The plate offcuts come in handy to make other accessories including the bait board.
Finally the boat is finished, painted, engine fitted (Mariner Verado 150 ), off we go to the slip. Boat goes in the water, a few heads are turned, an old boy comes over and said, “who made your boat mate?” I turned to him and said “I did”, with a big grin.
The boat handles superbly, after owning it now for approx. 2 yrs. I have had no problems, punching the sea easily and holding a good line, the boat is good for 76 km/hr on a flat still day but had no problem sitting at 20knots in moderate seas. We fish off shore regularly and with the floodable keel she sits more stable when we are drifting and at anchor.
To sum the boat up its awesome, from the start to finish it’s your boat, to achieve this is a great feeling of self-pride, I am now saving for another kit.”
